
Human Lactation
Breastfeeding and Human Lactation is a university course taught entirely on the Internet. The course is open to nursing and non-nursing students and can be taken for 3 or 4 credit hours. The course is taught every semester but enrollment is limited. Please email Dr. Nancy Powers nancy.powers@wichita.edu before enrolling so that we can determine your eligibility for the course.
This online course is designed for the student who already has clinical experience working with breastfeeding mothers and infants and would like to improve her knowledge base and approach to clinical cases.

Course Objectives:
- Review fundamental anatomic, biologic, and physiologic concepts of lactation and breastfeeding.
- Describe epidemiologic trends, historical events and promotion programs related to breastfeeding and lactation.
- Promote and maintain healthy lifestyles for the breastfeeding dyad within a family system.
- Apply clinical decisions and teaching for selected health problems in the lactating woman and breastfed infant based upon knowledge of physiologic processes.
- Analyze evolving roles and ethical dilemmas for health care providers in advanced practice as a lactation consultant.
- Prepare for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiner Examination.
