Does your Business need a Boost?

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has awarded Wichita State University with funding to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Kansas’ technology-based small businesses in the innovation and commercialization of new technology.  The funding comes from the SBA’s Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership program, which awarded grants to 22 organizations.

The Vision of FAST
The FAST Program is a competitive grant program designed to strengthen the technological competitiveness of small businesses. It improves the participation of small technology firms in the innovation and commercialization of new technology, thereby helping keep the United States on the cutting edge of research and development in science and technology.  Funding is provided for an array of services (e.g., outreach and technical assistance) in support of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

The Benefits to Kansas Businesses

The goal of this initiative will be to:

  • Introduce the SBIR/STTR program and development opportunities to regional innovators, with intentional outreach to women and underrepresented business owners and inventors, and
  • Identify, unlock and advance university and corporate innovations that currently exist in the region, but are not being fully utilized. The initiative will use an integrated four tier approach to strengthen the competitiveness of small business concerns:

a) A suite of technical assistance programs will be developed and presented to various industry applicants. A prequalification tool will be used to gauge the assistance needs of innovators and prospective SBIR/STTR applicants.
b) Mentorship networks will enable SBIR/STTR applicants and active SBIR/STTR recipients to learn from each other as well as from technology and business development experts. Collaborative partners, such as SCORE, SBA District Office, small business development centers, chambers of commerce, professional and trade associations, inventors associations, etc., will bring essential resources to the mentorship network.
c) The SBA FAST program will provide business advice and counseling, review of SBIR program funding opportunities, and finance options to promising technology developers identified through outreach, from collaborating partners, and by program managers of participating SBIR agencies.
d) Provisions will be made available for innovators to further their technologies in research and development. WSU will provide access to technically sophisticated laboratories that can support the diverse needs of complex technologies and regulatory certification that may not be available with the limited resources of a small company.
