Middle Level Secondary Residency Program (MLS/MAT)

MAT studentThe MLS/MAT program is a partnership between WSU and Wichita-area school districts, which combines coursework and experience-based learning in a classroom setting. During this two-year residency, participants obtain positions as para-educator interns in the WSU Cooperative Education Program and work under the supervision of veteran teachers, while completing requirements for licensure and a MAT degree.

Key elements identified from various models of successful teaching residency programs include:

  • A two-year residency consisting of coursework and classroom experience.
  • Systematic mentoring and support while learning pedagogy.
  • Ongoing professional development through the residency and support in obtaining license.

To be eligible for the MLS program, students must:

  • Complete at least a BA/BS degree from an accredited institution prior to entry in the subject(s) they will teach.
  • Meet GPA requirements of 2.75 in the last 60 credit hours.
  • Be admitted to the WSU Graduate School.
  • Receive passing scores on the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and the Praxis II content area exam.
  • Secure a position as a para-educator in a partnering school district through WSU's Cooperative Education Program.
  • Complete summer prerequisite education coursework.
