Mathematics Education Program Requirements (5-8) and (6-12)

 Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Overview

Preparation for highly qualified mathematics teachers begins at Wichita State University! Programs for initial licensure or added endorsements in Middle-Level Mathematics (grades 5-8) and Secondary Mathematics (grades 6-12) are available. Throughout the program, you will experience a variety of field placements, instructional strategies, technology, and teaching opportunities, culminating in a semester of full-time student teaching. Coursework provides for a balanced blend of mathematics content and pedagogical skills.

*To complete the Secondary Program within four years, Secondary Math Education majors will begin their content preparation with Calculus 1. The requirement of Math 111 is waived for them since Math 111 would be a prerequisite for Calculus 1.

Admission Requirements

The College of Education offers numerous programs in addition to Teacher Education. Information about applying for the Teacher Education Program isincluded in the Teacher Education Application Packet. The packet includes:

  • Admission Requirements
  • Application for Admission

The completed packet should be submitted toEducation Support Services (ESS)the semester before the student plans to begin the Teacher Education Program.

Contact an Advisor
Consulting with the Math Educator advisor is recommended even before initial enrollment at WSU since many of the major requirements can be coordinated with the General Education program. Because of math prerequisites and course availability, it is imperative to work with an advisor prior to enrolling each semester. Example: Math 621 (Elementary Geometry) is historically offered only in the Fall semester.

Program Outline
A total of 124 hours are needed to complete a Mathematics Education Degree. For initial licensure in Middle-Level Mathematics (grades 5-8), twenty-four (24) content credits beyond Math 111 (College Algebra) are required. For initial licensure in Secondary-Level Mathematics (grades 6-12), twenty-seven (27) content credits beyond Calculus 2 are required. For Secondary-Level Mathematics, in addition to the content credits, math application courses from two different divisions of study are required.
