The Kansas Government Finance Officers Association is bringing the national GFOA Accounting Academy to Kansas!

The spring academy is being held in at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex on June 13th-14th, and 20th-21st from 8:00 am—5:00 pm.  Registration for the spring academy is now closed.

A Fall academy will be held in Overland Park, Kansas at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center on September 5-6, and 12-13 from 8:00 am—5:00 pm. Staff from Allen Gibbs and Houlik will be teaching the curriculum. 

Those completing the Accounting Academy will receive 40 CPE’s. Those who register must attend all class sessions to receive credit.

Fall GFOA Academy registration is $450 if received by June 21, 2013 and $480 if received anytime thereafter.

Who Will Benefit:
Accountants and auditors new to the public sector, and any public finance professional wishing to expand their knowledge of governmental accounting

Program Overview:
Accountants and auditors new to the public sector must immediately face the daunting challenge of mastering the highly specialized rules, guidelines, and practices applicable to state and local governments. This intensive five-day workshop, intended for those who al-ready possess at least a basic knowledge of private-sector account-ing, combines lecture, discussion, and exercises to help newcomers make this difficult, but essential transition.

Seminar Objectives:
Those who successfully complete this seminar should be able to:

  • Explain the unique aspects of the governmental environment that have led to specialized accounting and finan-cial reporting
  • Identify the appropriate generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Categorize transactions and events as exchange, exchange-like, or nonex-change
  • Select the appropriate fund to use to account for a given function or ac-tivity
  • Categorize the various types of in-terfund activity
  • Apply modified accrual accounting to activities reported in governmental funds
  • Apply accrual accounting as modi-fied for use in the public sector
  • Identify each of the basic financial statements
  • Identify the format and contents of mandated budgetary comparisons
  • Identify the basic sections of a comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) and the essential components of each
  • Interpret the basic financial state-ments
  • Identify the essential elements of a comprehensive framework of internal control
  • Identify key differences between audit-ing in the public and private sectors (e.g., Single Audit and “Yellow Book” audits)
