BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
The pre-professional, undergraduate major places primary emphasis on the general area of communication sciences and disorders. The major (51-52 hours) involves a combined curriculum in speech-language pathology and audiology.
All students must have coursework in biological sciences, physical sciences, social/behavioral sciences, and mathematics to meet ASHA certification and Kansas licensure requirements. Consult an advisor for appropriate coursework.
Admissions
Students who are interested in the CSD undergraduate program must be admitted to the University and meet the minimum requirements for entrance into the College of Health Professions. Additionally, students must submit an application for admission to the major prior to enrolling in their last semester of prerequisite courses, typically in the spring of the sophomore year.
Deafness & Hard of Hearing (DHH) Concentration
The DHH concentration prepares students to work with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. This concentration provides a degree path for students who may choose to pursue careers in sign language interpreting. It also provides an additional foundation in deafness and hearing impairment for students entering the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.
This program of study emphasizes the importance of communication in all modalities: signed, spoken and written. As such, students will study typical and atypical communication, audition, amplification, aural rehabilitation, signed language systems, and speech-language interpreting. With an undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders and the DHH concentration, students will be prepared to advance their skill in sign language interpreting, if they so choose. The emphasis of this program is on understanding, embracing, and accommodating diversity and valuing the contributions of individuals with sensory differences as vital members of every society.
The undergraduate major in CSD with the DHH concentration requires a total of 56 credit hours. Students wishing to enroll in this concentration must meet the admission requirements for the undergraduate major.
Cooperative Education
Are you interested in gaining more experience in your field of study while pursuing your undergraduate degree? The Cooperative Education and Work-Based Learning program at Wichita State University has many options available for students. CSD majors should contact Cathy Ellsworth (cathy.ellsworth@wichita.edu) regarding placements. A maximum of 8 hours (CSD 481) and/or 4 hours (CSD 481N) may be applied towards the bachelor's degree. Graduate students may apply 3 hours (CSD 781) towards their degree with departmental approval.
