Does your degree matter?

Earning a degree is no small feat!  In fact, it is a significant achievement and an important investment. Therefore, the success of our student’s future depends greatly on the educational foundation and education quality you receive. To guarantee we are providing the best to our students we undergo an ABET accreditation process.  Graduating from an ABET–accredited program is important because:

  • the degree has nationwide recognition.
  • it’s highly valued by employers. In fact, employers and professional societies play a significant role in developing the criteria used by ABET to accredit programs.
  • it may provide eligibility for many student loans, grants, and/or scholarships.
  • state licensing boards and certification programs may require graduation from ABET accredited programs during the registration or certification process.

What is ABET and Accreditation?

An ABET accredited program verifies that the quality of the educational experience meets with the standards of the profession. Additionally, it permits and eases entry to a technical profession through licensure, registration, and certification.  ABET is committed to ensuring an institution is utilizing best practices and innovation in education. It evaluates an institution on its commitment to continuous learning and student perspective in regards to quality improvement.  ABET also ensure that programs within the institution are guided by industry, government, and academic constituents through formal feedback.  Many employers, including the federal government and multinational corporations, require graduation from an ABET-accredited program to be eligible for employment in certain fields.

Highlights:

  • Accredited status is not permanent; it has to be renewed through periodic review.  In the United States, academic accreditation is voluntary and decentralized; it is carried out by many non-governmental, non-profit organizations.
  • Academic accreditation typically involves an external quality review by a team of professional experts from academe or industry who volunteer to contribute their professional knowledge and experience to quality assurance and improvements for education.
  • ABET accreditation is not a ranking system; rather, it is a form of quality assurance, declaring to the relevant professional community and to the world at large, that a program meets the quality standards set by the technical profession.
  • ABET accreditation applies to programs only, not degrees, departments, colleges, institutions, or individuals.
  • ABET is a federation of member professional and technical societies.  These societies and their individual members collaborate through ABET to develop quality standards, known as ABET Criteria, on which ABET review teams base their evaluations of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology programs.
