A capital priority

Currently, the AEGD program does not have a dedicated facility. And there is no room for further expansion at the College of Health Professions on the WSU campus. The program began in fall 2009 and is being held at GraceMed Health Clinic, a Wichita community health center that provides medical and dental care on a sliding scale.

Providing the AEGD program with its own facility is WSU’s capital priority.

AEGD coat pocket"On behalf of Kansans, WSU has the opportunity to help address the state’s troubling oral health care scenario," WSU President Donald L. Beggs wrote in a recent editorial. "These times are tough, but we still must work for the future of Kansas. Important partners... are committed to helping us house the program properly in Wichita."

Construction on a building for the program is set to begin in 2010. The estimated cost of phase one is $6.6 million. Though many in the community are committed to creating and equipping the facility, more support is needed

WSU’s vision is to grow the AEGD residency program to be the premier program of its kind locally, nationally and internationally. To accomplish this goal, a new structure with state-of-the-art technology is required to attract talent to the program. Additionally, it will be a great benefit to the community.

Wichita and Kansas will benefit from the AEGD facility because:

  • dental workaccess to dental care for the uninsured, under-insured and underserved patients throughout the state will increase.
  • the facility will extend the care currently available through the Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation Dental Hygiene Clinic at WSU beyond preventative care.
  • primary dental care, pediatric dentistry, implants and full mouth rehabilitation, orthodontics and advanced clinical techniques will be available for all.
  • the building will bring more dentists to the state of Kansas.
