All About Advising

Being a member of both the WSU community and the Honors community you have the benefit of multiple advisors:

Academic Advisor

This is where you start. Your academic advisor is a skilled professional who can help you with course scheduling, career planning, internship information, international opportunities, academic success goals, scholarships, etc. Find your college's advising department below:

Faculty Advisor

Later in your college career, you will meet with your faculty advisor to determine courses specific to completing your major. Talk to the staff in your major's department to determine who your faculty advisor will be.

Honors Advisor

And of course, your Honors advisor is available to help you with specific questions about Honors courses, the Honors graduation requirements, and specialized scholarship and post-graduate opportunites. Below are frequently asked questions related to honors.

1. I just received my acceptance letter to the Honors College--can I start signing up for honors classes?

Yes! And congratulations for becoming a new member of the Honors College!

2. Who is my Honors Advisor?

Your Honors Advisor wil be Dr. Kimberly Engber, Honors Dean, or Dr. Jeffrey Stephens, Honors Advisor and Coordinator of National Scholarships & Fellowships. To schedule an appointment, email honors@wichita.edu, drop by the office in Shocker Hall, Building A (Room A1180), or call (316) 978-3375.

3. When should I meet with my Honors Advisor?

It is strongly recommended that you meet first with your academic advisor (see links above), but you are welcome to meet with Honors at any time. At least once per year, you should meet with your Honors advisor, and especially as questions arise regarding your Honors curriculum. Please see the current advising schedule above. These are also drop-in hours, so feel free to drop by with questions during this time. If you have an urgent question or something that can be handled in 10 minutes or less, please stop by the office in Shocker Hall A1180 anytime between 8:00am-5:00pm.

4. What is priority enrollment?

One benefit of Honors is the ability to enroll in classes on the first day of registration, as if you were in senior standing. This lets you have a better chance of getting into competitive courses that you want or need before they fill up. You do not have to meet with the Honors advisor before enrollment week to have this privilege.

5. How will the Honors Advisor help me?

The Honors Advisor can help if you have specific questions regarding an Honors course, your particular Honors sequence of courses, post-graduate plans, nationally competitive scholarships, Honors internships and general questions about Honors. The Honors Advisor does not advise on courses to take in order to complete your major; those questions are best handled by your Academic Advisor.

6. How do Honors students sign up to live on the Honors floor?

Honors students can sign up to live on the Honors floor when they fill out their Housing and Residence Life contract paperwork.

7. How do I complete Honors?

Learn about our Honors requirements and detailed curriculum. For more information, or to ask about a specific situation, email honors@wichita.edu, call (316) 978-3375, or drop by our offices in Shocker Hall.

8. What courses does Honors offer?

Honors strives to provide a robust variety of courses for its students. Learn about our course offerings [PDF], types of honors courses, and honors internships.

9. How do I fit Honors classes into my busy schedule?

Honors offers seminars that can count for general education credits. We can advise you on how these courses might fit into your schedule, if you have any questions.

10. How would I withdraw from Honors, if I need to?

Come to Shocker Hall A1180, where we will have you fill out a voluntary withdrawal form. If you withdraw from Honors, your Honors credits will still count toward your degree completion.

11. What other resources might I need to begin the advising process?

If you have any further questions, contact our office at honors@wichita.edu, call (316) 978-3375, or drop by Shocker Hall, Building A, Room A1180.
