Transfer Credit and Exemptions

If you attended a college or university outside of the U.S., you may be eligible for transfer credit or exemptions for some of the subjects you previously studied. We accept transfer credit from many schools around the world.

Transfer Credit from Hong Kong Schools
Transfer Credit from Malaysian Schools

Transfer Credit from Singaporean Schools
Transfer Credit from Sri Lankan Schools

Transfer credit may reduce the number of subjects and the amount of time required to study at Wichita State. There is a 4-step process to determine your transfer credit award. These steps are:

STEP 1 – Student Applies to Wichita State University
We cannot give you information about the number of credits we might accept from your school (or how long it will take you to graduate from Wichita State) until you have applied and have been accepted to Wichita State University. Apply Now!

STEP 2 – Student Sends All Needed Syllabi to WSU
Because of the differences between the educational system in your country and the American system, we must ask for a syllabus (in English) for each subject that you previously studied at your college or university. Your syllabi should include as much detailed information as possible about the material you have studied in each subject, as well as the amount of time that you spent in lectures and laboratories. Please click here for an example of a syllabus.

STEP 3 -- Determination of Equivalencies
After you have sent us the needed syllabi in Step 1, we will begin a transfer credit evaluation for the subjects that you previously studied. This process involves our sending the syllabus for each subject you previously studied to the WSU department which offers a comparable class. For example, we would send all Mathematics syllabi to the Mathematics Department at WSU for review. Because we make a special effort to ensure that you receive an equitable amount of transfer credit, the evaluation process may sometimes be lengthy and this step can sometimes take 2 months to complete. For this reason, it is important that you submit your syllabi (as requested in Step 1) with your application for admission or soon thereafter.

STEP 4 – Degree Audit Evaluation
After Step 3 is complete, we will use this information to determine whether or not the subjects that you previously studied meet the degree requirements for your particular major at Wichita State. This is called a “degree audit.” It is important to note that not all of the subjects that you studied previously, even if they are comparable to subjects offered at WSU, may satisfy the degree requirements for your particular major. For example, if you took an Algebra class at your previous school and we determined in Step 3 that it is equivalent to the Algebra class offered at WSU, your Algebra class would meet a degree requirement for several majors at WSU, but not for Engineering. The Degree Audit Evaluation will determine the number of subjects (and approximate amount of time) required to complete your degree at WSU. A U.S. bachelor’s degree normally requires approximately 4 years to complete. Depending on your degree audit evaluation, the number of years required to study at WSU may be reduced. It is important to note that, even if you have completed two years of study at your school, it may take longer than 2 years to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State. Degree audit evaluations take approximately 2-4 weeks to complete.
