EDD Scholarship Competition and PLTW Showcase

On April 28, 2011, Wichita State University’s College of Engineering hosted the fifth annual Engineering Design and Development (EDD) Scholarship competition and the second annual PLTW Showcase. Over 30 teams of students entered projects from their PLTW classes. Entries were judged by professional engineers and educators.
The EDD projects are part of students' capstone course in the Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program. Teams of students work together to develop a solution to an open--ended engineering problem. Projects were judged based on:
- Problem selection and research
- Project construction
- Testing, real data and conclusions
- Poster presentation
The winning projects for the 2011 Kansas PLTW EDD Competition were:
- First place: "Fixing Jacob's Ladder" - Northeast Magnet High School
- Second place: "A Heavy Burden" - Northeast Magnet High School
- Third place: "Redefining Crutches" - Northeast Magnet High School
Members of the first place team were each awarded a $2000 renewable scholarship to attend WSU's College of Engineering; members of the second place team received $1000 scholarships; and the third place team received $500 scholarships.
For the PLTW Showcase, students from other PLTW classes entered their "Best" project. Winning entries for the PLTW Showcase were:
- Engineering Design & Development (IED) -- "Pulse Jet Scramjet Hybrid" - Northeast Magnet High School
- Principles of Engineering (POE) -- "Marble Sorter" - Arkansas City High School
- Aerospace Engineering -- "Aerospace Engineering Projects" - Northeast Magnet High School
- Biotechnical Engineering - "Respirometer/Yeast Mobile" - Northeast Magnet High School
- Gateway to Technology (GTT) -- First place tie -- "Magnets, Magnets!" and "Automation through Programming" - both from Curtis Middle School
