EDD Scholarship Competition and PLTW Showcase

On May 12, 2010, Wichita State University’s College of Engineering hosted the fourth annual Engineering Design and Development (EDD) Scholarship competition and the first annual PLTW Showcase. Over 30 teams of students entered projects from their PLTW classes. Entries were judged by professional engineers and educators.
The EDD projects are part of students' capstone course in the Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program. Teams of students work together to develop a solution to an open--ended engineering problem. Projects were judged based on:
- Problem selection and research
- Project construction
- Testing, real data and conclusions
- Poster presentation
The winning projects for the 2010 Kansas PLTW EDD Competition were:
- First place: "A Study of Aerodynamics of an SUV"
- Second place: "The Improvement of the Prevention of the Spread of Bacteria When Exiting a Public Restroom"
- Third place: "Innovation of Hospital Bedside Table"
Members of the first place team were each awarded a $2000 renewable scholarship to attend WSU's College of Engineering; members of the second place team received $1000 scholarships; and the third place team received $500 scholarships.
For the PLTW Showcase, students from other PLTW classes entered their "Best" project and the winners were awarded gift certificates. Winning entries of the PLTW Showcase were:
- Gateway to Technology (GTT) -- First place tie -- "Robot World" and "Elect-ricity, Elect-ricity"
- Engineering Design & Development (IED) -- "Redesigned Food Grinder"
- Principles of Engineering (POE) -- Marble Sorter
- Specialty Class -- "Aerospace Engineering"
