Traffic Appeals

You may appeal any Wichita State University parking citation or moving violation through the University Traffic Appeals Committee. Members of the committee are facuty, staff and students who meet monthly to consider written and verbal appeals of traffic tickets.

Appeal forms can either be picked up at the University Police Department or from the Student Advocate's office, room 200, Rhatigan Student Center, phone 978-3026. The Student Advocate can also assist you with filling out the form, and represent you to the appeals committee. The appeal form is also available in PDF format at the bottom of this page, which requires Acrobat Reader and can be downloaded by clicking here.

All appeals are based on the W.S.U. Traffic Regulations. Your personal opinion that the regulation is unfair or that you feel there is insufficient parking on campus is not generally perceived as a legitimate reason to dismiss the ticket.

Some examples of appeals rarely granted:

"I didn't know the WSU Traffic Regulation or policy"
Being Illegally parked for only "a few minutes"
Justifying a violation by stating, "They got away with it, so should I."
Violation of disabled parking regulations
Failing to display or improper display of your parking permit
"Someone else (Mom, Dad, sister, friend, etc.) was driving my car that day on campus"

Instructions:

  • Appeals must be filed within 20 days of receiving the ticket. Appeals turned in after 20 days are not considered.

  • Appeals are based on your written statement unless you opt to appear in-person. Appeals of moving violations must be made in person.

  • A $10.00 administrative fee is charged if you do not show up for your in-person appeal and do not give 24 hour notice to the University Police Parking Section.
  • A $5.00 administrative fee, per ticket, is added to the fine of those appeals not dismissed by the committee.
  • Make sure the address, telephone number and email address you provide is current and your writing legible. This information is used to notify you of the appeal decision, and to notify you of the time of your in-person appeal, should you choose that option. Failing to check your email on a regular basis will not be a legitimate exuse for missing an in-person appeal.

  • Read through the appeal form, check either the written or in-person appeal option, and sign and date the form.

  • On the back of the form, write out the reason(s) for your appeal. Include relevant facts, applicable portion(s) of the WSU Traffic Regulations, and any extenuating or mitigating circumstances. Remember: the details you provide is the information the appeals committee uses to decide whether or not to dismiss the ticket.
  • Turn in the appeal form, along with your copy of the ticket, to the University Police Department. The office is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A copy of your appeal and the ticket will be provided to you upon request.

  • The decision of the appeals committee will be sent to you either by U.S. mail, e-mail or both.

If you have any questions, please call the Parking Section at (316) 978-3450, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.
