In Compliance with the "Timely Warning" provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998 the University Police is giving notice of the following reported incident:
Shortly after 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 20, 2012, an unknown male approached a 28-year old WSU student, as she was walking north on the sidewalk from the Intensive English Language Center, 1747 N. Hillside, towards 17th Street.
The suspect grabbed the student’s arm, hit her in the shoulder with his fist, and wrenched an iPhone from her hand. There were several WSU students standing nearby. The student immediately shouted for someone to call the police. Several students chased the suspect south of the Intensive English Language Center parking lot, where the suspect ran west through the vacant lot, and jumped a fence.
The Wichita Police Department and University Police Department responded to the 911 call for help. The UPD is continuing to investigate the crime.
If you have information which may help solve this crime, please contact the UPD Detective Section, 978-3450.
This crime happened in view of several persons standing on campus property, adjacent to a busy street, near the intersection of 17th Street and Hillside. Although crimes like this happen most often in secluded areas away from other witnesses, this is a reminder that crime can occur at any place and at any time. Walking in groups, carrying electronic devices hidden in book bags or underneath outer clothing and remaining alert and observant concerning persons in your immediate environment may help reduce risk of being victimized by an offender. WSU students, staff and faculty members may program their mobile telephones for one-touch dialing to the UPD, 316-978-3450. Generally, law enforcement does not encourage persons to actively resist those offenders who violently try to steal property from a person’s grasp, although the decision whether or not to resist being harmed must remain the choice of the person in harm’s way.

UPD CAUTIONS ABOUT AUTO THEFTS ON CAMPUS
October 9, 2012
By Chief Paul W. Dotson, Chief of University Police
During September 2012, a 1992 Honda Accord was stolen during daytime hours from the parking lot located south of Cessna Stadium (Lot 4). A few days later, a 1994 Honda Accord was stolen during the day from the large parking lot adjacent to Hillside (Lot 1S).
On different dates following the thefts, the cars were recovered by the Wichita Police Department in different locations in Wichita. Both cars were missing their catalytic converters.
Yesterday afternoon, on October 8, a 1994 Honda Accord was stolen during the early afternoon from one of the parking lots located at 17th St and Holyoke (lot 24). During the same time period, a 1995 Honda Accord was stolen from the parking lot south of Cessna Stadium (lot 4).
The 1994 Honda was recovered by Sumner County authorities early this morning. The police do not yet know if the catalytic converter was stolen. The vehicle not recovered is described as a blue 1995 Honda Accord KS tag 548EUJ.
The early 1990’s Honda Accord models are popular cars and several of those models still retain fairly high resale values. Unfortunately, that means these models are favored by some car thieves. For the past several years, the 1994 Honda Accord has been reported as the number one most stolen car in the U.S. Typically, these early 1990’s Honda Accord models are stolen for the value of their car parts.
Catalytic converters, like those reported stolen, contain precious metals like platinum and are sold for scrap. The converters are usually not traceable, unless owners go to the effort of etching their driver’s license number and state on the items, a reputable scrap dealer notices, and the dealer notifies local law enforcement officers.
The UPD joins with the National Insurance Crime Bureau in promoting their crime prevention advice for all car owners:
1. Lock your car
2. Do not leave visible items in your car
3. Use a visible or audible warning device, such as a steering wheel lock bar or audible alarm
4. If your car is an early 1990’s model or older, consider whether or not to install a “kill switch” or fuel cut-off technology
5. Consider whether or not to install a GPS tracking device for your car in case of theft
The UPD urges anyone who observes suspicious or possible criminal behavior on campus to immediately call the UPD at 911 from a campus telephone, or from any of the 20 Emergency Blue Light Telephones on the main campus or call the UPD from your mobile telephone at 978-3450.
9/13/12
Shortly after 9:00 PM, Wednesday, September 12, 2012, the four suspects listed below approached a 35-year old WSU student, as he was standing near the front door of his OFF-campus apartment in the 1600 block N. Holyoke. This location is near 16th Street and Holyoke, one block south of campus facilities and one block southwest of a WSU Greek chapter house.
One of the four suspects was armed with a handgun. The gunman stuck the weapon against the student’s side and demanded money. The student gave his wallet. The gunman took the cash and returned the wallet. The gunman punched the victim’s face and kicked his leg. Then, all four suspects fled east on 16th Street.
The Wichita Police Department responded. Police officers stopped three persons in the area and recovered a BB gun lying on the grass near the three persons. The victim was unable to identify the three persons or the weapon. The persons were released. The Wichita Police Department is continuing to investigate the crime.
