Rowing Assistant Coach 2013

Jane Detwiler is in her first year as the assistant rowing coach at Wichita State University. Her experience and energy have been a great addition as we continue to build our program.

Detwiler has been the assistant women’s rowing coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa for the past two years. In 2012, she helped the Drake team win the MAAC Conference Championship, and helped coach the varsity four to a first-ever gold medal at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.

Before moving to Des Moines, Detwiler coached high schools teams in Wilmington, Delaware.  As the head coach at Concord High School, she helped crews achieve strong finishes at the Head of the Schuylkill, Head of the Charles, and Philadelphia City Championships. While coaching the novices at St. Mark’s High School, she led the novice girls’ four to a third place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional District Championships in May, 2010.

In 2000, she rowed in the New York Athletic Club 8+ that won Canadian Henley. She
has also been a member of Neried Boat Club and Wilmington Rowing Center.

Detwiler rowed in the varsity 8+ for four years at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, winning
three State Championships in 1998 through 2000, the Champion International Regatta
in 1999, and participating in the Women’s Henley Regatta in England in 1998. For three
years, 1999, 2000, and 2001, her Division III team was invited to row in the NCAA
Division I National Championships.

Detwiler holds a USRowing Level III Coaching Certification, and has been coaching since 2005.

assistant coach Although this is Sam Smith's first year on the Shocker Rowing Staff, he has been involved with WSU Rowing for over 7 years. A wichita native heW graduated from West High School and is a Wichita State University Alumni who graduated in 2009. Sam competed on the Wichita State University Rowing Team from 2005-2006 and 2007-2009.

Sam has a master’s degree from Wichita State University in exercise science. He has served as a volunteer assistant coach for WSU's rowing team from spring 09 - 2013. In his free time he enjoys playing the guitar, hanging out with friends, being active, traveling the USA and watching sports.
