In 2000 Lori Norten-Meier's grant proposal was funded by the National Writing Project and the first writing project local site in Kansas, based at Wichita State University, was launched as the Kansas Writing Project. That summer 12 teachers completed an Invitational Summer Institute with Dr. Norten-Meier. The English Department at WSU sponsored the grant and organized the activities of the KWP for the next two years. After a one year absence, Dennis J. Kear, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction resubmitted the grant proposal to NWP and the local writing project was back in the business of "teachers teaching teachers" as the South Central Kansas Writing Project. Dr. Kear has been director of SCKWP since 2004 and Jeff Roper, Andover USD 385 is the assistant director.
