Our Mission

A History of Representing Students...

The Wichita State University Student Government Association has been representing students since its first inception. We have records of the Fairmount College Student Council going back to 1912. Student Government at Wichita State University has had space in Fairmount Hall, Jardine Hall, Wilner Hall and finally a permanent home in the Campus Activies Center known as the Rhatigan Student Center. Our first recorded statute dates back to 1958 and dealt with student conduct. Since then we have grown in size and influence. The current Senate consists of 27 student Senators annually elected by the student body who represent over 14,000 undergraduate, graduate, full and part time students. Committee Chairs recieve an annual stipend for their service. The Executive branch consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Director of Public Relations, Director of Governmental Relations, Director of Records and several Student Office Assistants. All members of the Executive Branch receive an annual stipend for their service. Our Judicial branch is composed of a Student Advocate and 7 member University Supreme Court. We currently work in partnership with the administration in the allocation of over $6.9 million in student fees. We also appoint students to over 30 campus committees that advise the administration. Our mission has changed little since we began and remains working to ensure students concerns are represented and addressed.

'Students Come First'

Student Government Association (SGA) sees our current motto as more then just words on a page. It is at the core of everything we do. SGA enables students to voice their opinions through campus committees and weekly public Senate meetings. SGA sponsors student services ranging from the Heskett Center Recreation Complex to Student Health Services. SGA awards over $130,000 in grants and scholarships annually to support students in their pursuit of academic excellence. These range from the McNair Graduate Student Scholarship to the HALA Scholarship Award for Community Service. SGA provides funding and support to over 140 student organizations allowing students to further explore their passions. SGA is governed by students and committed to student issues and concerns.
