UPWARD BOUND MATH SCIENCE

PROGRAM YEAR RESULTS 2006-2007

Seventy five percent (75%) of participants will demonstrate a 0.50 grade level improvement in math or math computation as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills or the Riverside Tests of Achievement and Proficiency.

The scores from summers 2006 and 2007 were compared. All but the rising freshman of the summer 2007 participants were tested. Twenty-seven students were present for both 2006 and 2007 assessments, thereby defining the comparison pool. Eighty-five percent (23/27) of students for whom comparisons can be made demonstrated at least a 0.5 GPE (grade point equivalent) increase in math or math computation. The avg. GPE for computation was 11.1 (11th grade, 1st month), and the avg. GPE for concepts was 11.7 (11th grade, 7th month). This objective was met.

Comparisons are made between June and July 2007 scores for 37 program completers. The avg. math concept score was 12.2 GPE with an avg. increase of 0.7 GPE. The avg. GPE for math computation was 11.3 with an avg. increase of 0.4. 73 percent (27/37) of the participants demonstrated at least a 0.5 GPE increase in either math concepts or computation.

Twenty-five percent (25%) of participants served will demonstrate a 0.05 increase in GPA, as demonstrated by the beginning GPA and ending GPA, for this program year.

Fifteen percent (15%) of participants for whom May 2006 and May 2007 comparisons can be made demonstrated at least a .05 increase in their grade point average. Comparisons were made for 39 participants that posted actual numbers for each grade period. Rising 9th graders did not post actual high GPA’s for either time period and current freshman only have a May 2007 GPA and a 9.99 for 2006. For these reasons, neither group was included in the calculations for this goal. Of the 39, 41% or 10/39 increased their GPA and another 23% maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher while pursuing a college prep curriculum. This goal was not met.

At least 65% of participants served will be retained in the project through the beginning of the next year or will graduate from high school.

Sixty students participated in the program year 05-06, receiving more than limited services. Of those 60, seven graduated from high school in 2006 and matriculated to postsecondary leaving 53 eligible to return. Of those 53 eligible, 43 did so. Therefore 81% who were eligible to return for 2006- 2007 did so.

Overall, 83% of students either graduated from high school or were retained. This is an increase over the 77% retention rate experienced in 2005-2006.

Eighty (80%) percent of high school seniors will enroll in a program of post secondary education each year.

Nine seniors participated as current students during the 2006 – 2007 program year and graduated in May of 2007. All nine matriculated to college the fall following their high school graduation for the 2006-2007 academic year. The college going rate for current UBMS seniors is 100% or 9 of 9.

Three enrolled at Wichita State University, one at Forest Park Community College, one at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, one at Wartburg College another at Butler County Community College, one at Fort Hays State University and the last enrolled and attends the Art Institute of Chicago.

Seventy-five (75%) of participants (students who participated in the program for at least 10 days in the summer component or 60 days in the academic year component) will enroll in a program of post secondary for the next fall.

The Upward Bound Math Science program graduating class of 2007 (including current and former students) is comprised of 25 students who participated in the program for at least 10 days during the summer or 60 days during the academic year. Of those 25 students, 19 enrolled in post-secondary the fall semester after high school graduation. Seventy-six percent (19/25 or 76%) of the graduating class matriculated to post-secondary for the academic year 2006-2007. This goal was met.

Sixty-five percent (65%) of participants who have completed the project will graduate from a program of post secondary education within 6 years.

Seventy-seven percent (77%) of UBMS Class of 2001 graduates completed a program of post-secondary within six years. There were thirty-two students in the high school graduating class of 2001. One student died during her collegiate career. Of those remaining 31 students, 24 have graduated from post-secondary and two additional are on track to do so. One student pursued military service in an effort to pay for higher education and four are working. Of the working students, at least three attended college for at least a year. This objective was met.

Six of the aforementioned students completed the program or participated throughout their senior year, including participation in the bridge program. Of those six, five or (83%) have graduated from postsecondary; the remaining student is a senior with plans to graduate in May of 2008.
