Wherever you are on the WSU campus, you can feel safe. The WSU Police Department, located on campus, is committed to ensuring your safety.
Our police station is staffed with 23 full-time police officers, five safety and security officers, three civilian office personnel and 50-60 students who work as cadets and dispatchers. All staff are fully trained and prepared to assist you.
At any one time on our campus, there are at least two police officers in vehicles, as well as bicycle officers, traffic safety officers and student cadets on patrol. At night, student cadets are on foot to escort you to your car, the residence halls or even nearby apartment complexes.
Additions and improvements to our campus safety measures in the last few years include new and improved exterior lighting, full-time crime prevention officer, bicycle patrol, 800 Mhz radio system, high profile (visible) police vehicles and the coordinated construction of a city police sub-station one block west of campus.
Here are some of WSU's campus safety measures:
Shuttle Bus
A shuttle bus is provided for students living in the residence halls and the fraternity and sorority houses on Omega Court. The bus operates from 6 to 11 p.m. on Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. The bus also provides several shopping trips each week to area shopping centers.
Outdoor Emergency Phones
Outdoor emergency phones are placed in strategic campus locations. The telephones are activated by pushing a button that directly dials the WSU Police Department. The call, which activates a blue strobe light, can be disconnected only by a police dispatcher. The police department also has TDD telephone capability to assist the hearing impaired.
Campus Buildings
Most campus buildings are accessible from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. while classes are in session. The buildings are patrolled by WSU police on a regular basis. Elevators in campus buildings are equipped with telephones connected to the WSU Police Department.
Residence Halls
In Wichita State's three residence halls, entrances are locked, and access policies are enforced by residence hall staff members. Entry is gained only through the main reception area, and visitors are logged in and out.
Heskett Center
Access to the Heskett Center, the University's sports and recreation center, is restricted to students, employees and alumni members with a valid identification card. These cards are checked at the front desk.
Parking Lots
Parking lots are restricted to vehicles bearing our University's decals for faculty, staff and students. Lots are well lit and patrolled on a regular basis by police in cars and by student cadets. The University provides shuttle bus service from residence halls to campus buildings beginning at 5:30 p.m., and student cadets are available in the evening to escort you around campus.
Athletic Events
Athletic facilities are restricted to paying customers and students with valid identification cards. Access during athletic events is controlled, and security is provided by WSU police and other law enforcement agencies.
