Dr. Victor Alan Markovich is a Professor of Music at the School of Music at Wichita State University (WSU) in Wichita, KS. At WSU he serves as Director of Bands, Director of Winds and Percussion Studies, Coordinator of Recruiting for the School of Music, and Coordinator of the Undergraduate and Graduate Instrumental Music Conducting Programs.
Additionally, he teaches graduate instrumental conducting classes, conducts the WSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and concert band, and administers and guides all aspects of the WSU band program including the athletic bands.
Under the direction of Dr. Markovich, the WSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble has performed for numerous national, regional, and state music conventions. The WSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble has been heralded as "one of the finest university bands in the nation,” receiving national critical acclaim for its "musically emotional and technically detailed performances."
Bands under his baton have performed for the American Bandmasters Association National Convention, College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Biennial Conference, CBDNA Southwestern Division Conference (twice), CBDNA North Central Division Conference; Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Biennial National In-Service Workshop (twice), the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) In-Service Workshop (nine times), Kansas Bandmasters Association (KBA) Convention (four times), National Band Association North Central Conference, Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) Conference and New York City’s Carnegie Hall.
Dr. Markovich received the Doctor of Philosophy in Music with an emphasis in wind ensemble/band conducting degree and Master of Music degree from The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and the Bachelor of Music degree from Kent (OH) State University. He has done additional study at the Cleveland (OH) Institute of Music, Bowling Green (OH) State University and Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, OH).
Dr. Markovich has served as an adjudicator and guest conductor for all-state and honor bands in forty-two American states, seven European countries. He has nationally published articles dealing with bands and music education. He is a contributor to volumes III and IV of Teaching Music Through Performance in Band.
Dr. Markovich is a Past-President of the Southwestern Division of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) and a Past President of the Kansas Bandmasters Association (KBA). He is an elected member of the prestigious American Bandmasters Association (ABA). He is the recipient of the WSU College of Fine Arts Outstanding Teaching Award and the Creative Activity Award. He is the recipient of the University Creative Activity Award.
