Kirby's Beer Store
Kirby's Beer Store was established in 1972 by Jim Kirby. He developed an entity that has endured and evolved into one of the most collective gatherings of Musicians, Artists, Hipsters, Thinkers and Freaks. Kirby's, located at 3227 E 17th Street, hosts musical acts from all around the nation as well as local acts up to 5 nights a week. With an expanded beer selection as well as free wireless internet access Kirby's is the perfect place to hang out, have fun, meet good people and possibly hear some great music.

In 2008, Kirby's was purchased by Alex and Kelly Thomas. Alex, a local musician and business owner has made a concerted effort to become more involved in the Wichita and WSU community. Kirby's has established The Kirby's Steve Schroeder Memorial Scholarship through the WSU foundation and to date has raised more than $2,400.00 for future student funds. In addition to this, Kirby's has proudly become a sponsor of the Midwest Green Earth Fest.

In September of 2007, Kelly and Alex had their first child, Solomon, and quickly noticed that they had increased the amount of waste they were generating as a family. In an effort to combat this they started to recycle baby food jars. This quickly turned into recycling the cardboard all of Solomon's toys came in, and now has spread to their efforts at Kirby's. Kirby's currently recycles as much mixed paper, cardboard, plastic, some glass and aluminum cans as possible. If you've ever been to Kirby's you will quickly notice that space is a commodity. This means not every piece of waste can make it to the recycle bins, but the effort is there. Kirby's uses PRo Kansas Miller Recycling Center.

As a way of commemorating Kirby's involvement in this year's Green Fest there will be limited edition Kirby's shirts made from 100% certified organic cotton. A portion of profits from the sale of these shirts will be donated back to the WSU Green Group!
