Wichita State University seeks an experienced administrator and seasoned academic leader to serve as Dean of the College of Health Professions.  This senior administrative appointment will assume leadership of a very strong and diverse academic unit.

As one of Wichita State University's six degree-granting colleges, the College of Health Professions offers twenty-three health professions programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree levels. The College enjoys excellent physical facilities, and its health professions programs receive outstanding support from the surrounding health care community, which includes three major medical centers, a Veteran's Administration Center, a state medical school, and numerous clinical facilities and practitioners.
 
The University is located in a diverse metropolitan area of approximately 640,000.  The economic base of the region is in technology-based manufacturing and health care and a higher percentage of Wichita’s metropolitan GDP is derived from exports than any other metropolitan area in the country. Wichita State University expects to take a leadership role in diversifying the region’s economy and enhancing the quality of life.

The Dean, who reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Health Professions and has the responsibility for advancing the academic quality and stature of the College. The dean must be a visionary leader who is committed to strategic planning, inter-professional collaboration, ethical leadership, and skilled in human and financial resource management.  The new Dean will be charged with advancing the educational and research agenda of the academic units within the college and working closely with the major health care providers in the greater Wichita metropolitan area.

The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • an earned doctorate in a health sciences or related discipline from an accredited institution;
  • a distinguished track record of teaching, research and service, or clinical expertise commensurate with appointment at the tenured full professor level;
  • effective interpersonal skills and highly proficient oral and written communications skills;
  • a strong administrative background with at least five years of successful experience at the rank of program director, department chair or above.
  • experience with accreditation processes common within colleges of health professions; 
  • ability to clearly articulate the nature of the college mission in an urban setting;
  • demonstrated entrepreneurial skills combined with the ability to leverage the expertise of faculty to enhance the health of the citizens who reside in the greater Wichita metropolitan area and the state of Kansas;
  • demonstrated success in securing and/or managing grant funding;
  • be capable of working within a robust team and shared governance culture and comfortable in building both inter and intra-professional relationships; 
  • be fully committed to inter-professional health education, health care and life sciences research, and to building a stronger community of healthcare practitioners, researchers, and students;
  • demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to working as a member of the senior academic leadership team that consists of the vice president for academic affairs, the associate vice presidents for academic affairs and the college deans.

The successful candidate will have the following preferred qualifications:

  • an innovative leadership style;
  • a combined passion for teaching and research;
  • prior success in leading and growing a major program, department, college, or business, including the recruitment and mentoring of researchers, practitioners, and educators who embody high caliber professionalism and diversity;
  • experience supporting technology transfer, public/private partnerships, and university engagement in the external community.
