Wichita State University seeks an experienced, dynamic, and visionary leader to serve as the Dean of the Barton School of Business.  This senior administrative appointment will assume leadership of a very strong and diverse academic unit, with a growing national reputation. 

The Barton School is building on its success as a nationally recognized source of entrepreneurial business leaders for the global marketplace.  The School is AACSB-accredited in business and accounting.  The Barton School offers ten undergraduate majors (BBAs), as well as four graduate degrees including masters in business administration (MBA and Executive MBA), economics (MA), and accounting (MACC).  There are six academic and outreach centers:  Center for Economic Development and Business Research, Center for Economic Education, Center for Entrepreneurship, Center for International Business Advancement, Center for Management Development, Center for Real Estate, and a seventh, the Koch Global Trading Center, open in Summer 2014. Ties between the Wichita business community and the Barton School are particularly strong, providing faculty and students with opportunities and resources that enhance teaching and learning, including an active cooperative education experience for students. 

The University is located in a diverse metropolitan area of approximately 640,000, located in the I-35 corridor.  The economic base of the region is in technology-based industries and health care, and a higher percentage of Wichita’s metropolitan GDP is derived from exports than any other metropolitan area in the country.  Wichita State University expects to take a leadership role in diversifying the region’s economy and enhancing the quality of life. 

The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Barton School of Business. The primary responsibility of the Dean is to advance the academic quality and stature of the School. This requires a visionary and dynamic leader who is committed to building sustainable support, enhancing the reputation and programs of the School, and promoting a culture of excellence and growth.  The new Dean will be charged with advancing the mission of the School and academic units within the School and collaborating closely with the community to enhance the research and technology transfer capacity of the Barton School of Business. 

The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:

  • Distinguished record of success in the academy and/or business commensurate with appointment at the tenured, full professor level (candidates with an academic background must possess an earned doctorate or equivalent). 
  • Proven ability to raise funds from public and private sources and to engage with business and industry to build sustainable support for the Barton School.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial skills and an ability to leverage the expertise of staff and faculty in order to enhance the educational and research missions.
  • Prior success in leading and expanding a major initiative, program, department, college, or business.
  • Ability to recruit and develop high quality and diverse students, researchers, staff, practitioners, and faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a senior leadership team, consisting of the Provost and Senior Vice President, Associate Vice Presidents, and college Deans.
  • Demonstrated ability to build cross-disciplinary/departmental initiatives with other units to promote technology transfer and applied learning.
  • Proven commitment to diversity and to strategies that incorporate the valuable contributions of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Capable of working within a culture of shared governance in Barton School.
  • Ability to be a dynamic, engaging, and effective spokesperson that actively advocates for and strengthens the link between education and business and economic development.
  • Ability to bridge academic and business communities, communicate persuasively, and foster relationships with internal and external constituents. 
  • Ability to advocate for new delivery systems for instruction, including online learning. 

The preferred candidate will have the following qualification:

  • Experience with accreditation, such as AACSB and HLC. 

The Barton School of Business seeks a visionary leader to guide the college through this period of growth. The new Dean will arrive at Wichita State University at an extremely exciting time in its history as the university embarks on an ambitious plan for enrollment growth, enhanced research, and the increased development of technology transfer opportunities under new leadership and a capital campaign.  Part of the enhancement includes the Innovation University and a new Barton School of Business building, which is to foster a culture of innovation — one geared toward business creation and reviving Wichita’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, being globally competitive. As online learning becomes an integral part of the growth of Wichita State University, the Dean will advocate for the development of high quality online and flexible courses within the Barton School of Business.  The Dean will ensure continuous improvement of faculty through professional development to support the quality of curriculum and instruction in face-to-face, blended, and online modalities within the Barton School of Business.  In support of WSU’s mission, the Dean will advocate for and incorporate university systems and processes that support faculty and students both on-campus and off-campus.  More information about the Barton School of Business can be found at www.wichita.edu/barton
