Wichita State University has many fine traditions but most pale in comparison to the rich history of  HIPPODROME.  This event has endured the test of time and remains one of the oldest campus traditions in the nation.

Now entering its 86th year, Hippodrome has undergone many changes.  Hippodrome first appeared in 1928 where students and organizations were invited to enter a stunt competition for a ten dollar prize. Today, students participate in skit competitions and special attractions, both of which showcase the many talents our students have on campus.

Hippodrome used to be a one-day event but has since dramatically grown to include a full week’s worth of activities.  The early years saw such events as wrestling and boxing matches, organizational booths and a country store.  More recently, Hippodrome activities have included best legs competitions, hippo calling contests, ice cream socials and casino nights.  Who knows what future events will bring to campus?

Despite changes throughout the years, skit performances continue to be Hippodrome’s main attraction.  No one can predict the plots of the plays on performance night since themes have varied from animal impersonations in the early 20’s, to rewrites of Disney classics, to today’s satires of current campus, community and national events.  Each skit is conceived, written, choreographed and produced by Wichita State students.
