Advising

Developing a healthy relationship with your advisor is integral to a successful academic experience. Each semester, students meet with their advisor in order to discuss progress on academic and professional goals, and to select classes for the upcoming semester.

For incoming freshman or transfer students, you will first meet with ADCI's Academic Advisor and Student Services Specialist Alicia Fullilove. After that initial meeting, an advisor is assigned based on your area of study. Advisors are faculty members that guide students through their degree plan, provide mentorship and help students successfully graduate.

When you meet with your advisor, come prepared with your 4-year degree plan and a selection of courses filled out on the Registration Worksheet. There are online resources and Degree Sheets to assist you in this process. Advisor meetings are required in order to register for classes.

Preparing for Your Advising Session

In order to be prepared for your advising session, you will need to:

  1. Create a 4-year degree plan and bring it with you
  2. Do a degree audit and identify the classes you need
  3. Look at the Schedule of Courses
  4. Bring a filled-out Registration Worksheet with your classes for next semester
  5. Check to see if you have any holds on your account
  6. BE ON TIME

Your 4-year degree plan is your academic road map. To create one, login to your myWSU account and go to the myClasses tab. Use Degree Works or CAPP to help you create your degree plan, run a degree audit and determine your next classes needed to get you to graduation. ADCI also provides Degree Sheets to assist in creating a 4-year degree plan.

To use Degree Works or CAPP, look for this block on the myClasses page:

NOTE: Determining whether to use Degree Works or CAPP depends on when you joined WSU.

Once you have identified the classes you need, start building your schedule. To find what classes are being offered for next semester and at what times, go to the Registration Tools block on the myClasses tab. Any questions about the course itself should be directed to the course Instructor.

Click "Look Up Classes" highlighted in red to find current course offerings:

Fill out your Registration Worksheet with your selected courses for next semester. You and your advisor will go over the Registration Worksheet to ensure that everything is correct and successfully moving you toward graduation.

If you have a financial hold of $100.00 or more on your account, you will need to speak to Accounts Receivable before you can meet with your advisor and register for classes. If you have an academic hold, schedule your advising appointment and bring this hold to your advisor’s attention.
