Audrey Schultz, a 1991 Wichita State graphic design graduate, is the artist of this whimsical scene of the university's mascot WuShock and the sculpture Happy Mother.
Gracing the campus in all seasons are the 76 works of art in the Ulrich Museum of Art's Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection. The sculptures are spread across Wichita State's 330-acre campus.
In 2006, Public Art Review named this collection among the Top Ten campus sculpture collections. The sculpture depicted at left is Happy Mother, 1958, the first piece purchased by WSU in 1972. Chaim Gross's sculpture explores a theme that the artist turned to frequently in the course of his career: the emotional bond between a mother and her children.
Born in the Carpathian Mountains of Austria, Gross and his family fled their home during World War I and lived several years as refugees.
He immigrated to New York with his brother in 1921, and enrolled at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in 1925.
