Shockers Begin Season With Strong Showings

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State Shockers are two tournaments into the 2012-2013 season and have had strong finishes in both.

Both the men’s and women’s teams took home a second place finish this weekend at the Illinois State BPA Tournament in Peoria, Ill.

Despite a 350-pin lead after the first day of qualifying, the women were unable to pull out a win during the elimination match-play portion of the tournament.

Upon finishing in the top eight of the field, the women earned a spot in the knockout final round, eventually making their way thru the semi-final round. Unfortunately, the Lady Shockers could not top Robert Morris-Illinois, settling for second place.

“This was a great early season tournament with a solid field,” Assistant Coach Mark Lewis said. “A lot of good performances happened, but also with a number of opportunities to learn and grow from.”

The men also advanced to the knockout round. After making their way through the round, the Shockers advanced thru the semi-final round. Unable to gain momentum against Robert Morris-Illinois, the men also fell short in earning their second title of the season.

“We learned a lot. It was a good tournament, with a lot of positives,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “We will continue to get better.”

The Shockers began the season with a sweep at the Midstates Collegiate Tournament on Oct. 13-14, in Wichita, Kan.
