Shockers End Regular Season with Solid Showing at Hoosier Classic

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men’s and women’s regular bowling season has come to a close as both teams competed in the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., over the weekend. The men took home a second place finish while the women earned third place in the last tournament of the regular season.

The Shocker men finished the qualifying round in third place after nine team games. They went on to compete in the match-play finals, which consisted of a best two-out-of-three Baker game format.

The men cruised through the quarter-final match against Urbana University, 2-0. They kept the momentum going as they defeated Calumet College, 2-0 in the semi-final match. Unfortunately, the men fell short in the championship match, 4-2 against Morehead State University resulting in a second place finish out of 77 men’s teams.

“We weren’t able to get completely lined up on the championship pair of lanes,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “After falling behind 3-0, we fought back, winning the next two games, but the lanes changed quickly in an unfavorable direction and we were not a factor in game six. More improvement will continue.”

The Lady Shockers dominated the qualifying round of the Hoosier Classic, knocking down 8,819 pins. The next nearest team was Pikeville College with an 8,580 qualifying total.

The women started strong in the match-play portion of the tournament, defeating Florida State University 2-0 in the quarter-final match. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the rhythm in the semi-final match, losing 2-0 to Robert Morris College.

Senior Jazreel Tan finished the season strong with her eighth All-Tournament Team finish of the year. She averaged 196.9 for the tournament.

Next, the Shockers will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the Intercollegiate Championships Sectional Qualifier held March 8-10. The top four teams from each of the four sectionals will advance to the Intercollegiate Team Championships in Lincoln, Neb., April 18-20.
