Shocker Bowling Strikes It Big In Vegas

WICHITA, Kan. – Six Shocker bowlers qualified for their chance to earn the Intercollegiate Singles Championship title next month in Lincoln, Neb.

Qualifying consisted of four locations throughout the country; Las Vegas, Nevada; Allentown, Pa.; Fairview Heights, Ill.; and Smyma, Tenn. The top four women from each sectional site advanced, while the number of men’s advancers fluctuated depending on the number of entries. The singles championship field will ultimately consist of 24 men and 16 women.

Only eight qualifying spots were available at the Vegas sectional location where the Shockers competed yesterday. On the men’s side Francois Lavoie (Quebec City, Canada) and Devin Bidwell (Moorpark, Calif.) claimed two of the four men’s spots. Lavoie led the field, averaging 225.2 for six games. Bidwell earned the third spot after averaging 218.2.

On the women’s side, all four qualifying spots went to Shocker women. Allie Ijams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the field with a 220.2 average for six games. Freshman Dasha Kovalova (Ukraine) followed behind her with a 217.5 average. Third and fourth place went to Jazreel Tan (Singapore) and Tannya Roumimper (Bandung, Indonesia), respectively.

“I switched to a completely new thumb hole two weeks ago and this was the first tournament since I changed it, so I was very relieved,” Ijams said. “Yesterday will help in the next round of the ISC, but more so for the team sectional; confidence from yesterday will definitely carry over into today’s bowling and work to help the team as a whole.”

Today the team portion of the sectional qualifying begins. Teams will bowl 32 Baker games today and 32 Baker games tomorrow for a total of 64 Baker games over the weekend.

The top four teams in each division at each sectional will advance to the 2013 Intercollegiate Team Championships.
