Shocker Bowling Says Goodbye to Longtime Supporter

WICHITA, Kan. – Former Rhatigan Student Center Director and longtime Shocker Bowling Program supporter Bill Smith passed away this morning due to complications from two recent strokes.

Smith was the second director of the Wichita State University Student Union Building (CAC/RSC) from 1978 until he retired in July of 2008. He was also one of Shocker Bowling’s longest supporters.

During his time as a director, Smith provided leadership and direction for the development of students, staff, facilities and programs to meet campus needs and to maintain a proper balance in all aspects of the student center.

In addition to his daily tasks, Smith was a proud supporter of the Shocker Bowling Program for more than 30 years. He traveled with the team to nearly 20 national tournaments during his time at Wichita State. The William H. Smith Bowling and Recreation Center, currently located in the lower level of the Rhatigan Student Center, was re-named to honor Smith in 2008.

A memorial service for Smith will be held at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd, Derby, KS, 67037 on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be sent to the Wichita State Foundation, 1845 Fairmount, Wichita, KS 67260-002 in care of the Shocker Bowling Scholarship Fund.

The Rhatigan Student Center has been the major financial and administrative supporter of the Wichita State University bowling program since 1959.
