WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State freshman Daria Kovalova defeats Germany’s Birgit Poppler to take home the women’s title at the 35th European Champions Cup on Sunday in Zoetermeer, Netherlands.
Kovalova has spent much of the first semester traveling abroad, resulting in an absence from the first two tournaments of the Shocker Bowling season. Fortunately, it has paid off.
After a 1-0 loss in the first game of the title match, Kovalova came back with a 226-199 win over Poppler. Her win forced the pair into a third game, with the winner being crowned the champion.
Kovalova was able to defeat qualifying leader Poppler with a 216-211 win.
“We’re very proud of Dasha,” Shocker Bowling Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “We’re happy for her and her family.”
In the qualifying preliminaries, Poppler topped the field with 223.09 average, and led the tournament all three days of qualifying. That wasn’t enough to stop Kovalova from dominating the single elimination match-play portion of the tournament.
Kovalova was amongst 36 women from 35 countries competing for the title.
The Rhatigan Student Center has been the major financial and administrative supporter of the Wichita State University bowling program since 1959.
