WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State Lady Shockers are headed to the Intercollegiate Team Championships next month in Lincoln, Neb. The women are looking to earn the 20th national title for the Shocker Bowling program.
The women qualified for the national tournament after dominating their field at the Intercollegiate Sectional Qualified last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. The Las Vegas Sectional Qualifier was one of four locations across the country. The top four men’s and top four women’s teams from each qualifier advanced to nationals.
The women finished the tournament more than 400 pins ahead of second place finisher University of Maryland – Eastern Shore. Over the course of the two-day tournament, the team averaged 198.5 for 64 Baker games. If the men’s and women’s divisions were combined, the Lady Shockers would have claimed second place in the 31-team field.
“The women did well this tournament. They communicated with each other about lane play and transition, which ultimately led to their success,” Assistant Coach Mark Lewis said. “We will continue to work hard to prepare for nationals.”
This year the Lady Shockers have claimed first place 7 out of 10 times during the regular season with the lowest finish being third place.
The women’s team also claims the top three women bowlers in the entire collegiate field. They are Tannya Roumimper (Bandung, Indonesia), Dasha Kovalova (Ukraine), and Jazreel Tan (Singapore), respectively.
The team is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation.
