WICHITA, Kan. – The Lady Shockers fell short in earning a 20th national title for the Shocker Bowling program at the Xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships this year in Lincoln, Neb. The women completed the tournament with a third place finish.
“For the past year this team has been working really hard to come together as a team. There were some ups and downs in a way, but we always found a solution to solve it,” Wichita State junior Tannya Roumimper said. “We fell short in the competition, but the spirit inside each of us is still on fire.”
The women ended the first day of qualifying with a fifth place finish out of the 16 team field.
The qualifying round consisted of 24 Baker games. The Lady Shockers averaged 205.9 a game, 11 pins behind qualifying leader, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES).
After the completion of the qualifying round, teams were seeded into a double-elimination bracket. The first round of best-of-seven game matches consisted of the No. 1 seed competing against the No. 16 seed, No. 2 seed against No. 15 seed, and so on.
To finish the first day of the tournament, the Wichita State women won their first match against No. 12 seed Norfolk State, 4-1, with games of (226-214, 245-236, 242-238, 209-215, 237-205). They went on to round two where they defeated Kutztown University, 4-1, with games of (246-206, 195-245, 217-172, 258-242, 224-182).
“The goal was to keep believing that this team could do it. Keep up the spirit and always think positive,” Roumimper said.
Day two consisted solely of match play. The women began the day with a best-of-seven game match against UMES. Unfortunately, the Lady Shockers weren’t able to top the qualifying leaders, falling to the loser’s bracket, 1-4, with games of (232-193, 197-230, 203-225, 235-256, 219-225).
The women then faced Kutztown University for a second time, defeating the team 4-1.
The Lady Shockers moved on to face UMES for a second time in the semi-final round of the tournament. Unfortunately, they fell short, losing 2-4, resulting in a third place finish at the national tournament.
