WICHITA, Kan. – Three Shocker women earned a spot in 2012 Intercollegiate Singles Championships semi-final round which is set to air on the CBS Sports Network May 3, at 10:00 p.m. EST, with the finals telecast to follow.
The singles championship was held in conjunction with the xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships last week in Lincoln, Neb.
Wichita State junior Tannya Roumimper (Bandung, Indonesia) was the only shocker to advance to the final round, where she earned a runner-up finish to winner Kristina Mickelson of the University of Nebraska.
Although she put up a great fight, Roumimper was unable to pull ahead of Mickelson’s streak of 10 strikes in a row, falling short in the earning the title, 233-289.
On her way to the title match, Roumimper faced two fellow teammates. In the quarter-final round, she defeated junior Allie Ijams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to earn a spot in the semi-final round.
Again, Roumimper faced a fellow teammate, freshman Dasha Kovalova (Ukraine). Both girls got lined up quickly, but with a few more strikes, Roumimper pulled ahead for the 243-223 win, advancing to the final round.
“This was an incredibly dominant performance for our women’s team, with three of four on the telecast,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “We are thrilled for these players.”
WSU senior Jazreel Tan (Singapore) was unable to defeat Mickelson in the semi-final round, losing the match 165-192.
On the men’s side, Francois Lavoie (Quebec City, Canada) and Devin Bidwell (Simi Valley, Calif.) were eliminated in round two of three in the singles tournament.
