Advice for Parents

Thank you for taking an interest in your son or daughter’s career development. Your support and encouragement play an important role as they clarify who they are, learn about what they’re good at, and explore career options.

Parents can assist in a variety of ways:

Be an informed connector. Encourage your son or daughter to:

Listen to the options your student is considering, and ask clarifying questions that may help him or her think through the decision, and if appropriate, consider alternatives. Allow your student to make the decision.

Emphasize the importance of gaining work-related experience. Whether through internships, part-time jobs or practicums, your student can:

  • Explore career options from a first-hand perspective
  • Gain experience; in addition, some employers hire full-time employees from those who have completed their internship programs
  • Develop skills and enhance their knowledge base

Encourage your son or daughter to obtain the kinds of skills that employers want to see. Mastering these career readiness skills* through classroom participation, part-time jobs, internships and campus involvement will prepare them for a successful transition into their dream job.
