The Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry (AEGD) at Wichita State University, School of Oral Health, and College of Health Professions is a twelve-month postdoctoral education program which offers the dentist an opportunity for advanced comprehensive clinical experience in a variety of clinical settings. In addition, the trainee receives postdoctoral training in the sciences basic to dental practice.
The program will provide the education and training needed to develop clinical leaders in general dentistry, including practitioners and educators.
Our dental residents are supported by Graduate Medical Education (GME) funding through Via Christi Hospital, Wichita, Kansas.
Our mission is to train, educate and graduate competent and compassionate clinicians in all areas of dentistry with emphasis on quality comprehensive care, outstanding customer service, and socially responsible community outreach. Additionally, our mission is to recruit and retain dentists to practice in underserved areas throughout the State of Kansas.
To be the premier advanced education in general residency program locally, nationally, and internationally.
It is the goal of Wichita State University and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry faculty and staff to ensure all dental graduates gain at least one year of supervised postdoctoral experience in general dentistry before entering general practice or a field of specialization. The goal of such a program is to provide the type of training that will provide the dental resident with an understanding of the relationships between dental treatment and all other aspects of total health care. The emphasis in education is learning to employ concepts of prevention and management of overall health in addition to enhancing residents’ skills in mechanical dental procedures.
The dental resident thus gains valuable experience by following the clinic progress of primary care patients, as well as those with conditions not commonly seen or recognized in the clinic of a dental school. This increases the graduate understanding of the inter-relationships between dental treatment planning for optimal oral health and general health, as well as management of medical emergencies.
