Admission Requirements

BSN students are admitted to the nursing program after completing the 58 hours of pre-professional course work. Students are admitted to the nursing program in either the fall or spring semester. Application deadline for the fall semester is February 1st; for the spring semester, September 1st. To qualify as a candidate for admission to the nursing program, a student must:

  • Develop a plan for completing prerequisite courses.
  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.75 in all college work and a grade of C (2.0) or above in prerequisite courses. Returning adult students who do not meet these criteria may be eligible on the basis of recent academic achievement according to selection criteria.
  • Complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a minimum score on each of the four sections: math-50%, science-50%, reading-65%, English-65%
  • Submit an application to the School of Nursing one semester before enrolling in the nursing curriculum.
  • Be admitted to Wichita State University.

The following preprofessional courses are taken prior to the junior-senior professional curriculum:

Basic skill courses:

  • English I and II, speech, college algebra

General education courses:

  • Fine arts appreciation, humanities (history, literature, intermediate-level language, religion or women's studies) and introduction to philosophy or ethics
  • Social and behavioral sciences: general psychology, developmental psychology and introduction to sociology
  • Natural sciences and math: chemistry with a lab, microbiology with a lab, anatomy and physiology with a lab, statistics

Additional prerequisite courses:

  • Nutrition, and Medical Terminology.
  • The 6 hours of additional requirements for a BSN degree are an upper division ethics (Bioethics or Health Care Ethics) and an Issues and Perspectives general education course.
  • The professional curriculum is a 60 hour, four-semester clinical program
