The Wichita State University School of Nursing, Graduate Programs, offers both Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) options for graduate study in nursing.
The graduate-level Clinical Nurse Specialist specialization prepare registered nurses for advanced roles in clinical, educational, and research settings. CNSs serve as resources and role models to other nurses in patient care and case managment. Most clinical nurse specialists work in specialty areas in hospitals. More opportunities are becoming available in clinics, HMOs, and community agencies. WSU's CNS graduates are educated in their specialty through practicum experiences. They develop theoretical understanding in advanced scientific concepts and technical skills in research methodologies and care management. Graduates are eligible to apply for certification as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitoners (ARNP) from the Kansas State Board of Nursing and for certification from the appropriate national organization.
The graduate-level Nurse Practitioner specializations prepare registered nurses for advanced practice roles. The program focuses on direct patient care experiences in primary and/or tertiary care settings and on development of the knowledge and skills necessary for advanced nursing practice. Nurse practitioners work collaboratively with physicians and other health professionals to provide integrated quality care. Nurse practitioners function according to the rules and regulations for the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work. WSU's NP graduates are eligible to apply for certification as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP) from the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
