The School of Nursing at Wichita State University offers advanced placement to registered nurses seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The curriculum is designed so that the RN who has received an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an NLN accredited program and who meets the work experience criteria may achieve advanced standing in the basic nursing program through retroactive credit. Retroactive credit (25 hours) will be awarded during the final semester of coursework upon written notification to the Director of the Undergraduate Program. RN-Diploma students may achieve the twenty-five nursing credits through credit by examination (CrE) and portfolio review where applicable.
The program at Wichita State University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The program also follows the State of Kansas Nursing Articulation Plan.

The following admission procedure is outlined for the RN to BSN student.
Procedures For Receiving Retroactive Credit
The Associate Degree (ADN) RN student is eligible to receive nursing credit for 25 hours of ADN course work upon successfully completing the upper division major at Wichita State University. During the final semester of coursework, the student submits a written request to the Director of the Undergraduate Program and pays an administrative fee ($50.00) for receiving the credit. To avoid the award of duplicate (double) credit toward graduation, the associate degree nursing course work will be parenthesized on the transcript at the time twenty-five credits of upper division nursing coursework are posted.
Procedures for Earning Credit by Exam
RN diploma students who have graduated from an NLN accredited program and who meet the work experience criteria may earn 25 upper division hours through Credit by Examination (CrE).
Credit by Exam - NLN Acceleration Challenge Exams (ACE - RN to BSN) The student must obtain an average composite score of 100 on the three NLN Accelerated Challenge Exams with a minimum score of 85 on each exam to demonstrate proficiency. If the score achieved is less than 85, the student has the option of taking the second version of the test. If credit by exam is not successfully earned, the student would need to take the corresponding didactic course(s). RN's receiving nursing credit by exam must complete the NLN exams prior to enrollment in the clinical course, NURS 495 Clinical Capstone Course-RN.
Guidelines for testing:
Procedures For Earning Credit from Porfolio
The RN diploma student may submit a portfolio for review in one area of content covered by the NLN Accelerated Challenge Exams. Two faculty members with expertise in the specialty area will review materials. Final approval of credit will occur at the recommendation of the School of Nursing RN to BSN Committee. Upon approval, credit through portfolio review will be awarded in lieu of the NLN exam in that content area. Credit will be posted upon completion of credit by exam for the remaining two NLN exams.
The portfolio must include the following materials:
a) a vita which includes the identification of education, continuing education conferences, board membership, grants and certifications,
b) documents supporting items identified in vita,
c) letters documenting nursing work experiences, and
d) a letter of recommendation from present nursing supervisor specifically addressing current nursing practice experience.
Materials must cover the content relating to one of the NLN exams:
Materials must be submitted to the Director of the Undergraduate Nursing Program no later than the semester prior to enrollment in NURS 495, clinical capstone course for RN's.

PLAN - Professional Link for the Advancement of Nurses
Butler Community College (BCC) Department of Nursing and Hutchinson Community College Department of Nursing and the School of Nursing at Wichita State University (WSU) have developed a "fast track" option to facilitate the Associate Degree graduate to achieve the BSN degree. The collaborative program is called "Professional Link for the Advancement of Nurses" (PLAN). Both nursing programs are committed to assisting nurses to complete the BSN degree to further their knowledge base, provide a means for continued advancement in the profession and to meet the necessary requirements for pursuing a graduate degree in nursing.
BCC/HCC students will declare their intent to complete the BSN degree early in their program and will take prerequisites for the BSN program as they pursue the associate degree. The key to ensuring students are taking courses leading to both degrees is effective advising from both programs and early development of an individualized schedule of course work. A carefully developed plan of study permits students to obtain both the AD and the BSN nursing degree in four years of full time study. The RN-BSN option at WSU is an on-line program except for the clinical components. This facilitates program completion for the associate degree RN who is working while pursuing the bachelor's degree.
Selection of this program is by the student's choice. Students may obtain the AD and practice as RNs and then decide at any point in their nursing career to pursue a BSN degree. Participation in the PLAN Program helps ensue students take the right courses to obtain the BSN degree.
