Wichita State's teacher education unit provides a program to develop highly qualified special education teachers to teach in the areas of high incidence, low incidence, gifted, and early childhood. The faculty provide theory and research in special education through classroom activities and lectures combined with practical knowledge of the classroom gained through field experiences (practica and internships). The Special Education program prepares professional practitioners who can facilitate learning for students with varying needs and abilities so that they will be successful learners and actualize their potential.
Candidates seeking advanced study within special education can choose either a degree or nondegree program.
The program includes courses that address special education law, characteristics of learners with varying learning needs based on the specialty area selected (high incidence, low incidence, gifted, or early childhood and unified), instructional methods, curriculum, transition, collaboration, and educational research.
Following full admission to the degree program, candidates take core courses related to special education and research; graduate seminars; and a thesis or research portfolio. Courses are offered during evening hours during the school year in order to support working adults.
Candidates who wish to add endorsement in an area of special education (High Incidence, Low Incidence or Gifted) or wish to seek licensure only (Early Childhood) may enroll in a nondegree program if they do not wish to seek a master's degree.
Applications for admission to the program are considered when submitted. For the high incidence, low incidence, and gifted programs, applicants must hold a teaching certificate or license in elementary, middle, or secondary education. For early childhood unified, students hold an elementary certificate or license.
The course sequence for the prerequisite courses begins in the fall semester and may be completed through continuous enrollment in the spring semester and summer session.
