Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

Course Description

This course will provide students with an awareness of safety issues to evaluate the structural engineering and certification of composite materials associated with civil aircraft structures, as summarized in AC 20-107B (Composite Aircraft Structure). This course was developed primarily by Wichita State University with subcontract to key industry experts under a cooperative agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration. After completing a 1-week period of self-study of fundamental composites and successfully completing an examination, students will study more advanced topics during an on-line, collaborative learning experience. Topics include challenges to the application of composites to aircraft structure; material and fabrication development; design and manufacturing; proof of structure; maintenance; and additional considerations (e.g. flutter, crashworthiness, fire safety and fuel tank issues, and lightning protection).  Teaching methodology will include reading materials, peer discussions facilitated by subject matter experts, and audio/visual resources. Students will be expected to spend at least six hours per week, including study, discussion participation and end of session tests. The course will conclude with a 2.5-day hands-on laboratory for additional credit.  Although lab participation is highly recommended, students unable to travel and participate in the laboratory will still receive credit for the main course.

Course Objectives

  • Students will describe the essential safety awareness issues associated with composite structural engineering technologies important to safe applications to aircraft products.
  • Students will describe engineering principles for substantiating composite airframe structures during all stages of aircraft product certification.

Who Should Attend?

  • FAA Directorate/ACO engineers participating in the certification of composite structures.
  • FAA Designees responsible for approval of composite structures.
  • International Civil Aviation Authorities and their designees responsible for certification of composite structures
  • Engineers at aerospace companies who are involved in designing and analyzing composite structures

Prerequisite

Students will take a pretest which will summarize their basic knowledge of composite materials and structures technology, during the first week of the online class.  It will take students approximately 7 hours to complete the prerequisite.  Once students have completed the prerequisite and pass the online assessment examination they will be given access to the rest of the course materials.

Course Topics include:

  • Challenges of Composite Applications
  • Design, Material and Fabrication Development
  • Proof of Structure
  • Quality Control of Composite Manufacturing Processes
  • Maintenance Interface Issues
