Registration Rates

Registration rates for conference attendees are as follows:

KAS member  $50 ($70 after March 12)
Non-Member $60 ($70 after March 12)
KAS Student $20 ($40 after March 12)
Student Non-Member $30 ($40 after March 12)

Attendees may also purchase meals which are not included in the registration rate.  Meals must be prepurchased by 3 p.m, March 27.

Friday Evening Banquet $18
Saturday Luncheon $14

Individuals may also purchase a t-shirt with their registration for $8.  T-shirts orders must be received by March 12.

Abstract Guidelines

In submitting your abstracts please follow the guidelines below.  Following these guidelines will help us greatly in formatting the meeting abstract booklet.


1. The length of the abstract is limited to 250 words.  This word limit does not include the title of your presentation, the names of the authors or the authors’ affiliations.  The word limit applies to the text of your abstract.

2. Enter your presentation title in all capital letters and end the presentation title with a period or a question mark.

For example, “EFFECTS OF INSECT HERBIVORY ON TALL THISTLE POPULATION GROWTH.”

3. For author names, please enter your first initial and (if you like) middle initial in the box labeled “First” on the on-line abstract submission form and your last name in the box labeled “Last.”

4. For author affiliation, please enter the name of your academic department and institution.  Do not include street addresses. Please separate the department name and institution name with a comma.  Do not use abbreviations in the name of your department or institution (e.g. “Kansas” not “KS”)

For example, “Department of Biology, Wichita State University”


Field trips (free but must pre-register)


Eureka SpillwayGeology of the Flint Hills and South-Central Kansas

This field trip will provide an overview of the basic bedrock geology in south-central Kansas and visit exposures between El Dorado and Eureka, KS. Sites will include examination of sedimentary rocks and fossils from the Permian and Pennsylvanian ages. We begin our field trip in El Dorado in Butler Co. and finish at Eureka City Lake Spillway in Greenwood Co.

We plan to meet at 1pm on Friday, March 30, 2012 at East Park in El Dorado, off of Highway 54, just east of the Kansas Oil Museum. We will make our way out to Eureka and be back to Wichita by 5pm.

Ninnescah ReserveNinnescah Reserve – Wichita State’s Biological Field Station

This field trip will provide an introduction to the ecological communities, organisms and research activities at the largest and most established of WSU’s Biological Field Station reserves.  The Ninnescah Reserve is located along the Ninnescah River and includes extensive areas of restored lowland prairie, several patches of unplowed prairie, riparian forest dominated by towering cottonwoods and diverse aquatic habitats.  A plant\prairie restoration walk and an avian biology walk will be led by WSU Biology Department researchers.

Meet at the Ninnescah Reserve at 4PM on Friday March 30, 2012. Walks will finish by 5:15PM.  Directions to the Ninnescah Reserve from Wichita and more description of the site are at http://webs.wichita.edu/?u=bioscience&p=/fieldStation/index/.  There will be space for up to 10 people to ride from Hubbard Hall on the WSU campus to the Ninnescah Reserve at 3:00PM.

Lake Afton ObservatoryLake Afton Public Observatory

End the first day of the 2012 KAS annual meeting with star-gazing.  The Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics’ Lake Afton Public Observatory will be open and free to Kansas Academy of Science meeting participants 9:30-11PM on Friday March 30, 2012.  Lake Afton Public Observatory has a 16 inch telescope and on March 30 we should be able to see the moon, Venus, Mars, the Orion nebula and Saturn. Also, check out the observatory’s museum and interactive astronomy exhibits.  Wear your KAS meeting name badge to get free admission.

Instructions for Presenters

 

Oral presentations

Length of presentations: Oral presentation should be no more than 15 minutes long and will be followed by up to 5 minutes of questions from the audience.

Presentation media: All of the presentation rooms have PCs with Powerpoint 2010.  If you use a MacIntosh then please try your presentation on a PC before the meeting to verify that your presentation displays properly on a PC.  Please bring your presentation on a USB drive.  Presentation rooms also have overhead projectors if you will use transparencies in your presentation.

Loading presentations: Please arrive at your assigned presentation room 15 minutes before the beginning of your session to load your presentation.  For the 9-10:30 presentation session, please arrive at your assigned room by 8:55AM (presentations will begin at 9:10).  For the 11-12:30 presentation sessions, please arrive at your assigned room by 10:45 AM (presentations will begin 11AM).

Presentation schedule: You will be sent an e-mail with your presentation time and location during the week before the meeting, once the schedule for the oral sessions is set.

Poster presentations

Size of posters: Posters may be up to 48 inches long X 36 inches tall.

Schedule for poster presentations: Posters must be up and available for viewing by meeting participants by 10AM.  The actual poster presentation session is 2-3:20PM.  During this presentation session, you are expected to be by your poster to interact with meeting participants.  All posters must be taken down by 5PM. 

Push pins, tacks etc.: The means to attach your posters will be provided.  You do not need bring anything for attaching your poster.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations requesting a refund must be made in writing. A 15% administrative fee will be assessed on all cancellations (This includes purchase orders.) There will be no refunds after March 27, 2012.
