Those aspiring to be a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) must enroll in at least nine hours per semester for two years. GTAs must instruct two sections of Public Speaking (Communication 111) each semester. An alternative possibility is to co-instruct in the areas of debate and forensics or possibly other communication courses.
As part of the contract, all GTAs receive a stipend of $8,000 (minimum) for nine months over a two-year academic calendar. GTAs also receive a 100 percent tuition waiver. Students must still pay the additional fees per credit hour.
The deadline for applying is March 1 for the subsequent academic year.
An undergraduate major or minor in communication is preferred; related fields of study are accepted.
Those whose first language is not English must provide documentation of a TOEFL score of a 100 or above on a computer-examination version or a 600 or above on a paper examination. Also, applicants must have a score of at least 28 on the speaking portion of TOEFL or 55 or above on SPEAK test. International student applicants must provide full documentation of eligibility.
The starting date is August 1 of the academic year in which GTAs are appointed. Each new GTA is required to enroll in a two-week August workshop (Communication 750C), taught by the Director of the Oral Communication Program. The primary purpose of this workshop is to prepare GTAs to instruct their assigned sections of public speaking. The workshop meets daily for two weeks in early August and carries three hours of graduate credit, which are paid for through the GTAs tuition waiver.
