WSU CAMPUS SAFETY

 Armed Intruder or Active Shooter

When an armed hostile person(s) is actively causing death or serious physical injury or the threat of imminent death or serious physical injury to person(s) on the campus, we recommend the following procedures be implemented:

  1. FLEE THE AREA
  2. SHELTER IN PLACE
  3. COMPLY, PLAY DEAD or FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE

Flee the Area

  • Run away from the threat and seek shelter (cover and concealment); avoid open areas
  • Call the University Police Department (UPD) by dialing 911 or (316) 978-3450
  • Give your name
  • Provide the location of the incident (be as specific as possible)
  • Describe what is happening
  • Describe or identify the shooters
  • Provide your current location (stay on the line, if possible)
  • Put obstacles or cover between you and the hostile person(s) while you are running away; i.e. vehicles, bushes, trees, buildings, etc.
  • If the shooting is occurring outdoors, run away from the sounds of shooting, and/or find cover and concealment

Shelter in Place
If you are unable to flee, SHELTER IN PLACE:

  • Conceal yourself in a locked or barricaded room
  • Cover any door windows
  • Keep quiet
  • DO NOT answer the door
  • Call the UPD by dialing 911 or 978-3450 (cell phone)

Comply, Play Dead or Fight For Your Life

  • If the person(s) is causing death or serious physical injury to others and you are unable to run or hide you may choose to be compliant, play dead, or fight for your life
  • If you are caught by the armed hostile intruder and choose to be compliant, do not stare at the intruder, but obey all commands. Do not pose a challenge - be submissive.
  • The last option you have may be to fight back. This is dangerous, but depending upon your situation, this may be your only option
