College of Engineering Scholarships

The College of Engineering annually awards over $500,000 each year in both merit-based and need-based scholarships to engineering majors in all classes. These awards are made possible by our gracious donors. Their generous gifts provide over 200 students the opportunity to continue their studies in the field of engineering.

Most College of Engineering scholarship recipients are selected using our online General Engineering Scholarship Application. This application is open from November 1 through February 1 each academic year, and applications recieved during this application period are used to select recipients for the following academic year.

Outline below is additional information about the General Engineering Scholarship Application, as well as additional scholarship opportunities including the Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering and other scholarships that require a separate application process.

The College of Engineering has over 70 active scholarship funds. The eligibility criteria is unique to each scholarship based on the guidelines set forth by the donor. Both merit-based and need-based scholarships are available. With the exception of the other scholarships outlined on this page, nearly all engineering scholarships are awarded using the General Engineering Scholarship Application.

Who Can Apply

  • Incoming freshman students
  • Incoming undergraduate transfer students
  • Current WSU undergraduate students

Application Guidelines - PLEASE REVIEW BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR APPLICATION

  • For need-based scholarships:
    • Need is determined based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Therefore, to be considered for need-based scholarships, you must have a FAFSA on file at WSU for each academic year in which you want to be considered for scholarships. You can learn more about the FAFSA and access the application at www.fafsa.gov.
    • Additionally, some need-based scholarships may require a need statement explaining your financial need situation. There is a space in the General Engineering Scholarship Application to submit this statement.
  • Most engineering scholarships require a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. If your GPA is below 3.0, you are still welcome to complete an application, but there may be a limited number of scholarships for which you qualify.
  • Questions on the General Engineering Scholarship Application will be used to match the applicant with the guidelines of the available scholarships. Be as accurate and as thorough as possible when answering the questions.
  • Some scholarships require an essay. Those scholarships will be noted in the application, including information about who is eligible to be considered. If any of those scholarships are of interest to you, be prepared to type an essay into the application.
  • You will receive an automated confirmation email after you submit your application. If you do not receive an email, your application may not have been completed and received. In that case, contact engr.scholarships@wichita.edu to inquire about the status of your application.

NOTE: All renewable scholarships will be based on a student’s ability to meet scholarship guidelines and the availability of funds.

Outside Scholarships

Additional engineering scholarships can be found through many different online search engines.

Online Colleges – Scholarships for Women
Women-specific scholarships originated decades ago as a way to encourage more women to consider pursuing college-level education. There is an effort to increase the diversity of the student population, creating additional opportunities, and encouraging entry into non-traditional fields of study, such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Additional information and the scholarship application can be found here.

BestColleges.com - College Scholarships & Resources for Women
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, since 1980, women have made up the majority of students at post-secondary, degree-granting institutions. Yet, they are still under-represented in a number of fields, most notably in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, and continue to earn about $0.77 of every dollar brought in by their male counterparts. However, there are a wide-range of resources dedicated to helping female students achieve success in both college and their careers. See a list of scholarship opportunities specifically given to female students.

ComputerScience.Org – Computer Science Scholarships for Women
It's widely known that there are far fewer women than men in computer science, but how can we help reverse that trend? ComputerScience.org is part of a new initiative to form the next generation of engineers, developers, and network administrators, and we are striving to get more women involved.

Because college can be so expensive for women pursuing engineering degrees, they have collected 20 scholarships available only to women earning computer science degrees.
