John Paul Johnson

Director, School of Music

Dr. John Paul Johnson is the Director of the School of Music at Wichita State University. Johnson has more than thirty years teaching experience in college, public school, and church music as well as administrative work in Kansas, Texas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He comes to WSU from the University of Kansas where he was a Professor of Music, Director of Graduate Studies, and Director of Choral Activities. His prior teaching appointments were at Texas State University - San Marcos and at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (PA).

Johnson currently serves as the national chair of Repertoire and Standards at the College and University level for the American Choral Directors Association. Under his direction, Johnson's choirs have sung at numerous state, regional, and national music conventions, have been featured in internationally-acclaimed festivals and premieres, and have toured throughout the United States and Europe. He has presented sessions at conferences of the Music Educators National Conference, the American Choral Directors Association, and the Midwest Kodály Music Educators Association. He has been a member of the Kodály teacher training faculty at the University of Central Missouri.

Johnson has been Conductor-In-Residence at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, Poland, and Trinity College of Music in London, England and has conducted numerous concerts at Carnegie Hall. He has served as guest conductor, clinician, and consultant for the Ministry of Education in Singapore. He has served as a conductor, clinician, or adjudicator for more than 600 events throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Johnson earned music education degrees from Westminster College (PA) and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Mentor award at the University of Kansas, the Texas State University - San Marcos Teaching Award of Honor, and the Distinguished Alumni Lecturer award from Westminster College.
