Professor of Musicology and Jazz Studies

John Goering is an active pianist in the Wichita area, performing regularly at the Hotel at Old Town, as well as leading his own trio. After earning his BM and MM in music performance from Wichita State University, John moved to Denver, where he free-lanced from 2002-2005, performing with groups such as Mistura Fina and Conjunto Colores. He was also on the music faculty of University of Colorado at Denver. John returned to Wichita, in 2005, to join the jazz faculty at Wichita State University, where he currently teaches jazz piano, jazz arranging and world music. He is also the leader/musical director of the seven-piece Latin jazz group Cubana Bop. His former teachers include Eric Gunnison, Chucho Valdes, Rebecca Mauleon, Andrew Trechak, Robert Spillman, Michael Spiro, Ed Soph, J.C. Combs, and Matt Wilson.
