Marie Allyn King came to Wichita from New York City, where she pursued a career including performing, producing and directing. Highlights of King's performing experience include appearances on Broadway in the musical Tintypes with Jerry Zaks, and as Aldonza in Man of La Mancha opposite Tony winner Ron Holgate. For 10 years she served as Producing Artistic Director of Cortland Rep, an Equity summer theatre in the Finger Lakes region of New York. During her tenure she produced over 50 plays and musicals, directing many to critical acclaim, including Blithe Spirit, The Elephant Man and the world premiere of Chester and Grace by Glenn Allen Smith. King co-founded and served as General Director of The Broque Opera Co. whose productions received national attention at such prestigious venues as the J.F.Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Pepsico Summerfare. King co-authored and directed The Ring of the Fettuccines, an introduction to grand opera for children, which was aired nationally on CBS Cable, and is published by Chicago’s Dramatic Publishing Company. She has directed numerous operas and musicals at WSU, including favorites The Wild Party (KCACTF Special Honors), Les Dialogues des Carmelites, Cabaret, The Secret Garden, Candide, The Magic Flute and The Seven Deadly Sins.

In addition to her academic responsibilities, King maintains her professional schedule. She has served as judge for the Metropolitan Opera auditions in Tulsa, conducted master classes for NATS, written articles on singer training for Opera America, and is a member of the National Opera Association. She served as the first Artistic Administrator of Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca, Italy. For ten seasons was the stage director of the Festival’s Studio Giovani, for which she and her colleague Richard Gordon created and directed three cabarets of Italian songs: Il treno dei desideri, Abassa la tua radio and Sognando Fellini. She also teaches and directs for Canta in Italia in Florence, Italy. Marie directed La traviata in Osaka, Japan, Un ballo in maschera at Springfield Regional Opera, and Le nozze di Figaro and L’histoire du soldat (in which she also performed the Devil) at the Bellingham Festival. For Cincinnati Opera's young artist program she directed La Cenerentola and Operamania; Ithaca Opera: Così fan tutte and Die Fledermaus; New York Opera Forum: Falstaff, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tosca, Il Barbieri di Siviglia, La Boheme. Since moving to Wichita she has had featured roles in Music Theatre of Wichita’s Where's Charley?, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and The Music Man. She has directed numerous productions for Opera Kansas, including Hansel and Gretel, Monsieur Choufleuri, The Marriage Contract, A Most Ingenious Paradox, Rita, and The Music Master.
