One of the worst tragedies of college sports history happened on Friday, Oct. 2, 1970. A plane carrying WSU football players, athletic staff members and team boosters crashed at approximately 3 p.m. on a mountain near Silver Plume, Colo., while en route to Logan, Utah, for a game with Utah State University. Thirty-one people were killed.
Mr. Thomas Shedden was one of the 14 players who perished in the crash. He graduated from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., and wore number 78. There is a memorial placed at the crash site that reads, “As time goes by, memories fade. But we will never forget..."
The Thomas T. Shedden Football ’70 Memorial was created in his honor.
