Hermina (Minnie) Huhn Fitzpatrick was born in Folk, Mo., in 1927. She was married to Tom Fitzpatrick for 48 years until his death in 1994. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was the second of 13 siblings and only graduated from the eighth grade. She “taught” others in a one-room rural school. Her children thought if she had been born at another time and place, she might have gone on to higher education and been a math teacher or nurse. Mrs. Fitzpatrick encouraged her children to pursue their education and made many sacrifices so they could achieve their future goals. Her eldest daughter, Carolyn Fitzpatrick Harrison, benefited from her mother’s encouragement and was able to complete her graduate nursing education at Wichita State University.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick always was pleasant and positive. She died in April 2004. Her daughter, Carolyn, and her son-in-law, Paul Harrison, established the Hermina “Minnie” Fitzpatrick Endowed Scholarship in Nursing in her memory so she could “pay it forward” and continue to promote education for others in the nursing program at WSU.
